The Queen Of Denmark Took Back Her Grandchildren’s Titles, And Her Kids Were Not Happy About It

A royal storm is brewing in Denmark as Queen Margrethe II weathers the fallout from a seismic decision. The enduring monarch made an announcement that received harsh blowback, especially from her adult children. Queen Margrethe upturned her family dynamic by deciding her grandchildren would no longer inherit royal titles. So, the question is: why did she do it?

Danish royal drama

People would certainly not expect to hear this sort of drama from Danish royals. How often does a royal family member learn a close relative has unceremoniously cut their titles? While Queen Margrethe’s changes to the line of succession are not unprecedented, they are still pretty rare — and her reasoning may surprise you.

Titles removed

The bombshell was dropped — or rather, lightly placed on the ground by a faithful butler — at the tail end of September. Her Majesty announced that four of her grandchildren would not inherit the titles of Prince or Princess anytime in the future. This new decree applies to her son Prince Joachim's children, the brother of Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark.

The grandkids lose out

Meanwhile, Frederik’s children shall retain their lofty titles, thus creating one icy atmosphere between them all. Joachim’s three sons and only daughter will have to settle as Counts and Countess at the cut-off point in January 2023. Specifically, they’ll be Counts and Countess of Monpezat. This honor comes from Margrethe’s late husband, the former Prince Consort Henri de Laborde de Monpezat, who sadly passed away in 2018.

Why did this happen?

The announcement means a very noticeable division has been made between Frederik and Joachim’s sides of the family. This makes sense, perhaps, as the Crown Prince is next in line to the throne and should technically take precedence. But does this resolve the problem? Did the Queen actually need to clip the titles of her grandkids from the royal lineup?
